September 2026 is a month of transition—from ancestor worship (Pitru Paksha) to the triumphant Navratri festival. The month begins with the sacred 15-day period for honoring ancestors, culminating in Mahalaya Amavasya (Sep 17), the most powerful day for Shradh. Then comes Navratri (Sep 18–27), the nine nights of Goddess worship—one of the most auspicious festival periods of the year.
Chaturmas ends on November 7, so material ceremonies remain restricted until then. However, spiritual practices and festivals reach peak potency.
Key Dates in September 2026
- Sep 1-17 (Pitru Paksha): Period of ancestor worship. No auspicious muhurta for new events during this period.
- Sep 17 (Mahalaya Amavasya): New Moon. Most important day for Shradh (ancestor offerings). Chanting Devi Mahatmya on this day is supremely auspicious.
- Sep 18 (Sharada Navratri Day 1): Ghatasthapana. Begins 9 nights of Goddess worship. Weddings resume AFTER Prabodhini Ekadashi (Nov 7).
- Sep 22-24: Maha Saptami, Ashtami, Navami—peak Navratri days with maximum goddess blessings.
Pitru Paksha (Sep 1-17) — Ancestor Worship Period
This 15-day period is dedicated to honoring ancestors and deceased family members through Shradh rituals and offerings. During this time:
- NO new auspicious activities should be started
- NO weddings or engagements
- NO major ceremonies or house entries
- Offerings to ancestors are most effective
- Meditation and spiritual practices yield exponential results
Sharada Navratri (Sep 18-27) — Nine Nights of Goddess
Start Date: Friday, Sep 18, 2026 (Ghatasthapana)
Peak Days: Sep 22 (Saptami), 23 (Ashtami), 24 (Navami)
End: Sep 27 (Vijayadashami/Dussehra)
The nine nights celebrate three forms of Goddess:
- Days 1-3 (Durga): Warrior goddess removing obstacles
- Days 4-6 (Lakshmi): Goddess of prosperity and abundance
- Days 7-9 (Saraswati): Goddess of wisdom and learning
Each day has specific muhurtas and blessings. Worshipping the Goddess during Navratri removes all obstacles for the entire year.
When Wedding Season Truly Resumes
Although Navratri brings great blessings, major ceremonies like weddings still cannot occur until Chaturmas officially ends on Prabodhini Ekadashi (November 7). Wedding season fully opens on November 8 with Tulsi Vivah—and from then through December, excellent muhurtas abound.
